Can I mention a mutual connection instead of asking for an introduction?

You can mention a mutual connection when the reference is accurate, relevant and approved where appropriate. It is a lighter approach than requesting an introduction, but it is not the same as a referral. Do not imply the person endorses you or suggested the conversation unless they actually did, and respect their preferences.

Ask what the connector is comfortable with

They may approve a factual mention, prefer a direct introduction or decline both. A visible network connection does not establish permission to use their name commercially.

Keep the statement precise

"We both worked with Alex on this kind of project" means something different from "Alex recommended I contact you". Use the latter only when it is true. Do not imply closeness based solely on shared employment or a public connection.

Give the recipient a business reason

A mutual name can add context, but the message still needs relevance to the person's role and a useful next step. Avoid treating it as a trick to force attention.

Measure the motion separately

Track approved mutual-context outreach separately from connector-delivered introductions. Their costs, recipient expectations and approval steps differ.

Orbb can help research and coordinate appropriate paths. The programme should preserve the distinction between a verified connection, an approved name mention and a personal introduction.
